On writing about depression

“Erasing Olivia” is meant to put you in the mind of a chronically depressed person—and a person who is watching someone manage that condition. I wrote the first draft while struggling with PTSD and depression and edited once my symptoms became more manageable. The raw material looked like blood on the page once I achieved a healthier mindset. Being on the inside of depression and watching someone from the outside are both incredibly difficult positions to be in. It was important to me to not portray depression as something you can “snap out of.” No happy ending guaranteed.
